4-Day Ausangate, Rainbow Mountain & Machu Picchu Trek
Day 1: Cusco – Tinki – Upis – Hot Springs
Begin with an early pickup from Cusco and a drive to Tinki. After breakfast, hike 4 hours uphill to the base of Ausangate Mountain, then descend 2 hours to the Upis campsite near relaxing hot springs.

Day 2: Upis – Pucacocha – Ananta

Day 4: Machu Picchu – Cusco
Catch the first bus to Machu Picchu for sunrise and a guided tour of the citadel (2–3 hrs). Optional hike to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain (advance tickets needed). Return to Aguas Calientes, then take the- train and bus back to Cusco.

When trekking the Ausangate route, prepare for high altitude, cold temperatures, and rugged terrain. Here’s a condensed summary of the essentials:
Essentials:
Footwear: Sturdy hiking boots with ankle support.
Clothing: Warm layers (thermal underwear, fleece/down jacket, waterproof jacket and pants), gloves, hat, scarf or buff.
Sleep: Cold-rated sleeping bag (can be provided), sleeping mat if preferred.
Gear: 30–40L backpack, trekking poles, headlamp/flashlight, water bottle or hydration pack.
Protection: Sunglasses, sunscreen (SPF 30+), lip balm with SPF.
Additional Items:

The Ausangate Trek is a challenging, high-altitude trek in Peru’s Vilcanota mountain range, covering about 70 km over 4 to 7 days, with most people completing it in 5 days. The trek reaches a maximum altitude of 5,200 meters (17,060 feet), making acclimatization essential.
The best time to go is during the dry season (May to September) for clearer weather. The trek involves remote Andean landscapes, glacial lakes, and mountain passes.
While it is possible to do it independently, hiring a guide is highly recommended for safety and support. The trek typically starts from the village of Tinki, about 3 hours from Cusco.
What to pack: Warm clothes, sturdy boots, a good sleeping bag, sunscreen, sunglasses, water bottle, backpack, trekking poles, and a headlamp.
Though generally safe, the trek is physically demanding and suited for experienced hikers. Proper preparation, acclimatization, and gear are key to a successful journey.
